Slow running computers are an inevitability. The key is in knowing what to do to eliminate the load/clutter on the computer, thereby making it faster. Before looking at tuning slow running windows, we also need to look at a few other things to speed up windows.
I.The age of the PC in question: Is it more than 4-5 years? if so, then the age would be a factor in the speeding up of the PC.
II.The RAM in the PC: Recommended is 1 GB. 512 MB is kind of a minimum requirement, upgrading to 1 GB would be a good idea in speeding up the PC.
III.Windows operating system drivers(need to be updated). This would be a great help in speeding up PC.
IV.Antivirus:Is the antivirus software updated?
V.System requirements: These need to be strictly adhered to, in order to speed up the PC.
i.System requirements for windows XP:
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
ii.System requirements for Windows 7:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics device
Assuming all the above are taken care of, we can looK at the final step to speed up windows
VI. Fine tuning windows:
Follow these simple instructions step by step:-
For windows XP:
1. Click start, Go to Run.
2. Type cmd, Hit OK. This opens up a command prompt. This is where we would enter the
commands to boost PC performance.
3. Type msconfig -4, click OK
4. click disable all, then click apply, then click OK, then click on exit without restarting..
5. Next, On the command prompt(black screen window), type the following command:
a.Cleanmgr:Type cleanmgr and press enter.
i. Choose your drive(for eg: c:,d:…)
ii. Hit enter, wait for disk cleanup to calculate the space to be freed, then hit OK.
b. Defragmenting: On the command prompt type defrag c: and hit enter, repeat this for all the other drives(e.g. d:, e:, etc)
6. Finally do restart the PC once, for the changes to be in effect.
For windows vista/ windows 7
1. Click start, type run and hit enter
2. Type cmd, Hit OK. This opens up a command prompt. This is where we would enter the commands to boost PC performance.
3. Type msconfig -4, click OK
4. click disable all, then click apply, then click OK, then click on exit without restarting..
5. Next, On the command prompt(black screen window), type the following command:
a. Cleanmgr:Type ” cleanmgr” and press enter.
As can be seen in step 6, fine tuning(speeding up PC) is pretty simple, but it needs to be done periodically to ensure the health of the windows copy used.
